On FCC units the anchorage carries the lining through every thermal cycle, so we treat hexmesh (hexmetal) and anchor welding as part of the refractory job, not a separate trade. Linings are installed by hand placing, ramming, gunning and casting to the project specification, and inspected to UOP, API and ASTM specifications.
New-build FCC units
With previous employers, Ron Ramsell led the refractory installation of five new-build FCC units:
- Honam refinery FCCU, South Korea, for Hyundai Heavy Industries
- BHPV new FCCU, Visakhapatnam, India
- Mozyr refinery reactor and regenerator, Belarus
- LUKOIL Nizhny Novgorod FCCU-1 (2008 to 2010) and FCCU-2 (2013 to 2014), as part of the UK supervision team managing the refractory subcontractor
UK refinery experience
Ron's career before RCSL included UK refineries such as Esso Fawley, Texaco Pembroke, Total Milford Haven and BP Grangemouth, and an FCCU turnaround at TOTAL Lindsey with 110 men over 42 days. Overseas work included BAPCO in Bahrain and QAPCO in Qatar. That experience of how different refiners plan and run turnarounds is what we bring to each job, alongside the technical detail of the lining itself.
Turnarounds and inspection as RCSL
We have carried out repeat work for Calderys, including hydrocracker supervision at LUKOIL Kstovo in 2021 and the FCCU turnaround at Phillips 66 Humber in 2022. In 2024 we carried out refractory inspection on the T&I turnaround at Prax Lindsey Oil Refinery for Refractory Inspection Services Ltd. Other refinery work includes FCC turnarounds for ENI and LUKOIL, Raffineria di Milazzo, anchorage welders for the regenerator at the Saras refinery, and an independent inspection for the Slavneft refinery at Yaroslavl.

Working inside a turnaround
Refinery work runs to the turnaround schedule. We agree scope, hold points and inspection requirements before mobilising, and the people who plan the work are the people who run it on site. Where the client or main contractor provides the refractory labour, we supervise and inspect instead.
